Tsinghua University is hosting a public international lecture series on the development of Asian communities. It is based on a comparison of architectural and urban culture between 'the East and the West', starting in week 1 of the spring semester (from Feb 25th).
International Exchange
The specially invited experts from China and abroad will present their research on pressing issues related to the development of communities in Asia, based on to their respective cultural backgrounds. Thus addressing issues of identity, globalization and regional developments concerning the contemporary Asian Community.
The selected speakers create an inter disciplinary overview, discussing architecture, urban planning and landscape as well as their comparative analysis on some outstanding cases from both China and abroad. Thus helping students develop their ability to understand various issues in different cultural background and cultivate their academic thinking within an international vision.

For a semester long series of 14 lectures, 10 distinguished academics and professionals from all over the world have been selected, including:
Prof. Gary Hack UPenn - USA
Gary Hack teaches, practices, and studies large-scale physical planning and urban design. He is the former dean of the School of Design, stepping down in 2008 after 12 years. Prior to coming to Penn, he was a professor of urban design at MIT, and a partner in the professional firm of Carr Lynch Hack and Sandell in Cambridge.
Prof. Peter Rowe Harvard-GSD
Rowe has served on the faculty at Rice University, where he was Director of the School of Architecture, and as a senior member of Rice Center and the Southwest Center for Urban Research. He was also a principal of the firm Environmental Planning and Design. Before becoming dean of the Harvard University Faculty of Design, Rowe served as director of the urban design degree programs and chairman of the Department of Urban Planning and Design at the Graduate School of Design.
Prof. Jurgen Rosemann NUS - Singapore
Jürgen Rosemann is professor at the School of Design and Environment, National University of Singapore. Besides, he is chairman of the International Forum on Urbanism (IFoU) and president of the Board of Supervisors of Beijing Institute of Sustainable Housing and Urban Renewal (BISHUR).
Between 1995 and 2010 he was member of the Board of Governors, later Board of Supervisors, of the Berlage Institute in Rotterdam. From 2000-2010 he served as chairman of this institution. From 1982 - 2009 he held a professorship at the faculty of Architecture, Delft University of Technology.
Mr. Siew, Gaëtan - UIA - World
World citizen, Gaetan Siew’s leadership and his vision of a world of sharing allows him to mobilize and inspire political and business leaders around a creative consensus unleashing the full potential of our resources. President of the International Union of Architects from 2005 to 2008, he travelled the world to meet international institutions and governments promoting greater solidarity. With his in-depth understanding of men, cities and global issues, he continues his mission through the Global Creative Leadership Institute. Prof. Zhu Yufan - Tsinghua University, China
Zhu Yufan is a landscape architect and Deputy Chair of Landscape Architecture at Tsinghua University, China. His research focuses on landscape design theory and landscape history.
Recent projects include the Central Park of Modern Art in Beijing Central Business District(2004-2006); the Memorial Park of National Patriotism Education Bases in Qinghai Atomic City(2006-2009); and the Quarry Garden in Shanghai Chen Mountain Botanical Garden(2007-2010), which won a 2012 ASLA General Design Honor Award
Prof. Jan Wampler MIT - USA
Besides his teaching as a prof. at MIT, Wampler runs a small architectural office. His interests are in design: the understanding and designing of the space between buildings as well as buildings that can respond to people's needs. He has a substantial number of projects built.
Time and Place
All lectures will be held at Tsinghua University's School of Architecture, Jackson Wang Lecture Hall, every monday afternoon between 1.30 - 3.00. In English; and open to the public.
