Il Polsino

This studio started from an analysis of certain pieces from clothing which were integrated into an architectural system. We picked the cuff and wrinkles, qualities that merged to form a massing that is simultaneously beautiful, yet strange.

This project takes inspiration from the industrial age in our exploration of beauty. While industry is synonymous with dirty energy and therefore “ugly” in society, the industrial age was also a time of romantic fashion. Victorian fashion was feminine, delicate, and nostalgic in contrast to the dirty world it existed in.

We analyze the ideas of femininity and romance, things that are delicate yet alluring and powerful. This project is intentionally provocative and somewhat uncomfortable. The arrangement is meant to look strange and “ugly” according to society’s standards, contrasting how it’s composed of cuffs and soft wrinkles which are features society considers to be beautiful.
