Midtown West is a vertical community located in midtown Manhattan’s west side, over the Hudson rail yard. It is to be built at the existing site of a 1960s office building at 450 W. 33rd Street, located just west of Madison Square Garden and Penn Station.
The program, normally collected into a single tower, is broken up into horizontal and vertical parts. The vertical sections are stacked into three towers, and the four horizontal sections slice the towers ino thirds and serve as bridges between them.
Vertical circulation is placed externally, providing people the opportunity views of the city and across the Hudson to New Jersey. This sysem references the transit tracks below.
The Athletic Club is the common bond amongst residents and tenants at Midtown West. The Club Bridge houses the main entrance, locker rooms, front desk, much of the fitness equipment, an Olympic-sized swimming court, and a running track. More club functions are spread into Tower 2. The upper Associated Press offices are accessible from the Club.
The lower half of Tower 3 is made of rental apartments. The upper half of the tower contains owner-occupied condominiums. Condominiums have direct elevator access to the Athletic Club, and easy access for all residents to the Commons Bridge.
Midtown West Hotel occupies Tower 1. The main desk, ballroom, meeting rooms, and a restaurant is located on the Commons bridge, and elevators to guestrooms are accessed from there. Hotel guests also have access to the Midtown West Athletic Club.
