Located in the heart of Downtown Los Angeles, The Alexandria was once one of the most prestigious hotels in the city. After being vacant for decades, this site will be transformed into a series of live - work apartments. This project progressed in two phases. The first consisted of a series of slices in plan and section through the building. These slices were then slid to varying degrees to create nine apartments and nine ground floor businesses. The second phase of this project reexamines the slicing and sliding process focusing on how this way of organizing space can affect one main features of the existing Alexandria Hotel. On the ground floor of The Alexandria is a historic ballroom, called The Palm Court. By changing the slicing and sliding process to only happen in section with the middle third of the building sliding forward, toward the street. This sliding transforms The Palm Court into a dynamic bar and event space.
