Sobremesa

SOBREMESA is a time of resting and leisure that usually takes place after lunch. It is a time to share experiences, talk and rest. It is a place to celebrate friendship and family. An essential part of Spanish folklore, this everyday event or happening has evolved into a ritual that goes beyond food, becoming an everyday ceremonial act with its rhythms and protocols, where time expands through endless conversations. In the sobremesa, place and time cannot be addressed separately.

The project understands sobremesa as an extension of public space. A place of meeting and celebration, of care and belonging, where citizens perform activities usually associated with the domestic sphere.

The project conceives the TABLE as a fundamental object and mediator that runs diagonally across the square, serving as a support for daily life. The objects that inhabit it belong to local crafts and are part of the collective imagination of the sobremesa, creating a legible symbolic composition where everyone is invited to participate. A zigzagging BENCH, enhances participation in the ceremony from different positions, embracing diverse and multicultural experiences. The circular GARDENS act as places of regeneration, embracing the necessary naturalization of the city.

The project aims to root this TRADITION and revisit it, in an attempt to democratize a public space that has too often displaced the citizen wills and rights to make way for the hegemonic economic powers.
