My name is Toby Newman, I'm a senior graduating in June from Stanford University with a B.A. in Art Practice and a B.S. in Architectural Design from our Civil Engineering Department as Stanford does not offer a B.Arch. option. I'm moving to New York City after I graduate and am currently looking for a job, preferably in an architectural firm anywhere in the five boroughs.
I have more hands-on design and construction experience experience than people my age because in high school I designed and built my own two-story small house in my family's backyard. This gave me a deep understanding of efficiency as it relates to economic design. I used reclaimed barn wood for siding which, along with my discount from working at a hardware store, made this project economically feasible for me. Although architects usually design with constructability in mind, I doubt that many of them have spent months digging a utility trench with a pickaxe. From the agglomeration of these experiences I learned what it feels like to deliver a structure from ideal form to physical reality. The building I’ve ended up with continues to endure time and impose itself on the environment in like no model ever could. I can say with certainty that it is nothing like making a model or a drawing.
I have a particular passion for computer modeling and an proficient in several different softwares that I use to laser cut physical models. I'm interested in architectural projects ranging from small and residential to large and civic and everywhere in between. My senior capstone project has been designing a concert hall for a site in San Francisco, which I've greatly enjoyed. I've also had work experience in the graphic design field and am really interested in interior architecture and design.
