This is a custom fixture that is designed to illuminate a brutalist concrete coffer ceiling in a lobby on Third avenue in New York City. The lobby is a double height space with the ceiling receding back into an elevated open second level. The ceiling was the main focus of the lobby, and we presented many different options to the client with this iteration being the one chosen.
The idea was to symmetrically light each coffer using a shape that both hid the light source and harmonized with the simple square design of the coffer.
The design of the lobby was a collaborative effort between Gensler and HDLC Lighting Design.
The fixture design and images are owned by HDLC lighting design.
