DC Prep Public Charter School at Benning St. is a combination addition and renovation of a former DCPS school in Washington DC. serving Elementary through Middle School children This project is nearing completion.
Shinberg Levinas was commissioned to renovate the existing building as well as design a 36,000 sq ft addition including a double-height agora with library and resource center. Also part of the project where new classrooms, offices, gymnasium, outdoor play areas, and parking on the lower level.
The building entry has been redesigned to incorporate separate entrances for the Elementary and Middle Schoolers. A series of skylights as well as the addition of windows to the formerly dark existing building allows spaces to be flooded by light. The new facade is fabricated using CBF Silbonit panels, with decorative fins accentuating the new entrance. Both reception areas including desk were also designed to accommodates the needs of the school as well as create a welcoming environment.
This building is attempting LEED Gold for which I am completing all documentation.
