reWoKen reincarnates as a big blank canvas for the villagers to reflect their vibrant life

living in a fishing village in one of the ends of the crowdest cities, left alone as if leaning out at the end of the world. you need experienced guides to find your way down to the sea and out again. life is already invigorative as it is, however, needs physical support to sustain its reason to be happy. yes, it is not easy to imitate and get a real vibe of life. it is not about buildings, it is about actions.

are you ready to get lost and make new friends?

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

located in Mumbai's most dense zone, Worli koliwada, a fishing village next to "sea link" in the Arabian sea, is a heterotopic forgotten land, spying the new skyline-badland for the modernity-urban village as "a-self-organized" distortional pixelated-space bending time with serpentine mazes through kaleidoscopic colors acting as extended private spaces blurring the restrictions of the public. Worli, with insufficient infra/superstructure, possesses a connected community, overspread forming unique spaces, perceived as a disease for contemporary urban, creates a desired vibrant society. A highly entropic-isolated-unfinished definition of the territory is used in creating a heterogeneous-dense-complex system adopted in urban life. The skyline was taken as the epitome to define fluctuating elevations of buildings. Existing shopping streets extend forming a circuit around mixed-use buildings surrounded by volumized public-open spaces connected with the sea.

how can we care for and regenerate an insufficient urban fringe, support a healthier life that extends to and is reconciled with water, in one of the densest districts of Mumbai, without losing connection to the lifestyle and culture of the aboriginal fishing village?

the perimeter of Mahim bay is surrounded by isolated and highly technological gated communities and skyscrapers -also isolated within themselves- which do not communicate with each other and are eager to cut off relations with the city and its inhabitants or interact minimum as a usual cycle for every big and loud city. on the other hand, Worli koliwada, with its insufficient technical infra/superstructure do possess a connected aboriginal community, some of them have been living there for generations, overspread horizontally in genuine need of space behaving like a benign ependymoma. this unique space pattern which seems like a disease for contemporary urban life creates a desired vibrant life that is not easy to reveal.

so this highly entropic, isolated, uncertain, and definitely unfinished definition of the territory is used in the continuum of creating space in regard to a heterogeneous, dense, complex system of a different interval in linear causality and simple systems. In this manner, the unique local urban village landscape of Worli is taken as a point of start and adopted in urban life. the skyline in the foreground is used as an epitome to define the fluctuating elevations of the buildings.

replicating the existing structure with pop-up modulated units, reWoKen fosters a tight and strong community, with piazzas, gardens, patios, and courtyards between and inside the common buildings serving for education, commercial, and leisure use of public and common needs

the main residences for Worli reside in the mainland as for Koli residences spread on semi-public wharves also serving as seafood restaurants. The promenade and the open spaces both divide and separate the Worli-Koli side while giving each other privacy also ruling as spaces for a convention. a mangrove forest is proposed for the outer coast to corroborate for high tide as well as a powerful infrastructure should be sustained with stormwater drainage and rain harvesting systems, percolation tanks, bioswales... etc.
