Mercado de Artesanías

The Artisanal or Crafts Market in Cinco de Mayo Plaza consists of 3 levels, the first two of which are destined for a large retail tenant, lined by artisan kiosks and food booths visible from the street level. The third floor is entirely retail and meets the height of its adjacent, historic Museo Reina Torres de Araúz. Once the city's main railway station, the market's unique form terraces away from the museum to provide a public square for eating, recreation, and impromptu folkloric presentations by the artisans. Additionally, the building cruves away from a highway, allowing for a spacious sidewalk and reduction of noise and polluted air stagnation. Its facade consists of a self-irrigation system with a series of aluminum "veins" that foster vegetation growth to help mitigate pollution between the highway and its users.

The markets’s form directly responds to its privileged, yet chaotic surroundings, allowing for attractive, engaging and necessary urban spaces.
