For edition 4.0 the challenge designers need to respond to was 'Water Feature'. Dubai is synonymous with water, the shoreline that extends along the length of the city, the Dubai Creek, the mammoth Dubai Water Canal project, the Dubai Fountains, and is rooted in its culture of giving as the refrigerated potable water cabins outside of private residences for passersby who require thirsts be quenched. Moreover, regional architecture hosts water features as central elements in courtyards of homes, acting as a spiritual refuge. These features cool the air around them to enhance both the physical and audio landscapes with the serenity only natural elements command.
Submissions were requested to design an urban water feature that can be placed in the outdoor area of Dubai Design District (d3)'s Design Quarter; be it a pond, birdbath, fountain, or any design that invites people to gather around water for enjoyment but must be proposed as an urban element that is a majority body of water.
The Omrania - CSBE Student Award for Excellence in Architectural Design, 1st Place
Graduating architecture students from nine countries in the Arab World submitted 82 design projects for the third cycle of the Omrania | CSBE Student Award for Excellence in Architectural Design. The projects came from Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria, and the United Arab Emirates.
The Award jury decided to award five equal prizes. The Award's total prize money of USD 10,000 therefore will be divided equally between the five winners, each receiving USD 2,000.
An Award ceremony was held at the Art Centre in Manama, Bahrain, on November 28, 2010 to honor the winners. The winning projects of the Award’s three cycles as well as a selection of submitted entries for the third cycle were exhibited at the Art Centre between November 28 and December 2, 2010.
