The Wahler Campus Project consists of two buildings connected by a covered walkway. The two buildings, one a renovation project and the other a new structure, are being developed for Achievement Prep Academy, a high performing charter school currently operating at the site in Ward 8. Since 2008 Achievement Prep Academy has operated a middle school out of the Draper School Building located at 908 Wahler Place SE. The school has added elementary and early childhood programs in the last few years that now operate out of leased buildings in other locations around Ward 8. Achievement Prep Academy (APA) and would like to consolidate all of their programs on to a single campus that continues to serve the neighborhoods surrounding Wahler Place SE.
This is a two phase project. The first phase will be the construction of a new fifty thousand square foot building that will operate as middle school. The second phase of the project will involve the renovation of the existing fifty five thousand square foot Draper School to meet the needs of APA’s elementary and early childhood programs. The design concept is to develop the two buildings using complimentary massing and materials to create a unified campus that is a landmark to the neighborhood. Care is taken to organize arrival and dismissal and to establish different entrances for students of the different schools, segregated from vehicular traffic. The site is organized inwards with opportunities for play and outdoor learning between and around the two buildings.
