Solana Beach, CA
The recently renovated Fletcher Cove Community Center (FCCC) is within Solana Beach’s treasured Fletcher Cove Park and sits on a bluff-top overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Despite its prime location, age and deferred maintenance had left the building in shambles and unusable. Dark interiors provided no connection to the park or views outside. Also, strict coastal regulations limited options for expanding or replacing the building.
What started as a grass-roots effort by a concerned group of citizens grew into a community-wide volunteer effort that included pro bono design services, community fund raising and volunteer labor… a modern day “barn-raising”.
A new, south-facing window wall fills the center with light and provides ample views of the ocean and nearby park. Wide doors allow occupants to spill out onto adjacent outdoor patios and help to compensate for the center’s limited floor area. Sweeping roof canopies mimic nearby ocean waves and provide FCCC a greater presence within the park and an inviting entry from the street. The roofs also shade door and window openings. Sustainability was a priority throughout the renovation and LEED Gold certification is anticipated from the U.S. Green Building Council.
