Master’s Degree Study Program SPATIAL STRATEGIES at the Muthesius University
The Master’s Study Programme in Spatial Strategies deals with the theme of space overall, including its production, appropriation, and design in terms of an extended, dynamic definition of space. In the face of the increasing medialisation of the public (and private) sphere and the increasing dissolution of distinct boundaries between individual disciplines such as interior design, architecture, design, urbanism, art, and media, the Master’s Study Programme was developed to address the increasing demand for qualified university graduates within these interdisciplinary professions.
The main focus will be on (temporary) Spatial Design, Scenography, and Spatial Intervention as an act of communication. The main emphasis on project work which integrates both analysis and research processes will be the foundation for the study of new (transversal) forms of knowledge and expertise, in which the threshold between artistic and scientific modes of practice will be a key factor.
The curriculum is interface-oriented, i.e. courses are integrated from the Muthesius Universitys curriculum, as well as from its external network. After the first basic semester, students can choose between two major subjects and will focus on an individual area of expertise:
Spatial Scenography / Intermedial Spatial Concepts
Spatial Intervention / Artistic research and interventions in (public) spaces.
Applicants for the Master’s Study Programme in Spatial Strategies can be graduates of Bachelor or Diploma programmes in the disciplines of Fine Arts, Stage Design, Architecture, Interior Design, Visual Communication, Design, or any other design-oriented study programmes.
