When a drastic change in economy, environment, or culture of a rural community occurs, rural design is necessary to ensure it will continue to prosper. Because of the geological make up of northeastern Pennsylvania, as well as the recent advances in technology, the farmland of Hop Bottom, PA is currently being honed as a valuable natural gas producer. An evolution of program development paired with suggested design strategies aim to sustain a successful community and economy, while responding to the site’s specific environment, culture, and industry. This thesis aims not only to devise program that creates solutions for today’s issues, but also to predict and provide solutions for future issues.
