My name is Shiyu Ma and I am interested in any entry-level jobs in architecture (eg. Technical Designer, Architectural Designer, Architectural Associate) positions and I have submitted a short work sample to Architect's online platform, focusing on my one-year professional experience at F.O.G. Architecture and Guangdong New Chang'an Architectural Design Institute and a few academic projects and research.
I earned my Master's in Advanced Architectural Design from UPenn in August and my internship mainly involved commercial architecture and educational architecture. They range from retail stores to urban brownfields. These projects helped me understand complicated overlaps of structures and tectonics while balancing historical value and modern aesthetics. I helped pre-design and showcase commercial complexes. My substantial research and expertise in AI-assisted design at UPenn led to an invitation to teach AI-assisted design processes at youyouke, a popular Chinese design website. My study at Sichuan Fine Arts Institute and UPenn gave me exposure to modern aesthetics, computational tools, and digital-driven approaches. My academic resume emphasizes rigorous digital form construction, optimization, scripting, sustainable design, and digital production of materials.
My years of experience might be shorter than you expected, but the long internship with F.O.G. Architecture and Guangdong New Chang’an Architectural Design Institute has enabled me to participate in various stages and types of projects deeper than most ordinary internships. After a few significant projects in an atelier-like environment, I realized this manufacturing style has apparent restrictions. Design intelligence aside, I'd like to see how different architectural companies manages workflow and design deliverables. The process by which architecture, structural, plumbing, budgeting, etc. work on a project to achieve efficiency and excellence is fascinating to me.

-Developed the visionary concept of “white floating puffs in a center city” as the foundational inspiration for spatial delineation and material choices. Emphasized an extensive exploration of project materials to enhance the distinctive visual ambiance, with a particular focus on attracting traffic to the space. Conducted in-depth site research encompassing the local environment, urban context, and traffic patterns.
-Meticulously selected creative and fitting materials, including RGP, brushed metal panels, and engineered wood panels, aligning them with the project’s unique aesthetic. Established and cultivated relationships with material suppliers, placing a pronounced emphasis on material study and negotiation, to ensure timely procurement and maintain the project’s design integrity.

-Project: Guangzhou No. 6 Middle School, 910,000 sq ft, Guangzhou.
-Pioneered the creation of a comprehensive 3D model for the student housing building, conceptualized and drafted intricate floor plans for a student housing facility. Took charge of assembling and seamlessly integrating models and drawings from diverse team members, highlighting a collaborative approach to complex project modeling. Orchestrated the design of library building facades, creating a consistent style that blends in with the overall architectural motif.
-Systematically gathered and formatted critical project data, including architectural drawings, site characteristics, and project prerequisites, which aided in the refinement of project blueprints and the creation of thorough debriefing presentations.
-Coordinated communication between the design team and stakeholders, playing a crucial role in fostering effective collaboration and ensuring alignment of project objectives.
