The 2019 Building Project brief was to create three studio apartments for formerly homeless individuals in the Hill neighborhood of New Haven. Our team proposed creating two-story units with double-height living spaces surrounding a central courtyard. The small courtyard connected individual porches for each unit, creating the opportunity for interaction between the residents while not forcing it. With the courtyard, each unit has four exterior walls, meaning they each receive some south-facing sunlight and have facing windows for cross-ventilation. While each unit is fairly separate from one another, the entire building takes on a monolithic form, integrating itself to the scale and character of the neighboring houses.
