Parasitic Space

My final project is a contemporary gallery in Nottingham. This project will aim to convert the currently car park space into a mixture of environments designed to inspire and support a new community of artists and locals.

Due to the art spaces are mainly located in the east of Nottingham, the proposed sculpture gallery will aim to promote art communication and education in south of Nottingham. Meanwhile, there is a potential to form a new active art area whith Nottingham Contemporary, The Galleries of Justice, Nottingham Castle Museum and Art Gallery and Nottingham Society of Arts.

The design approach is plug some parasitic spaces into the existing heavy concrete structure. Buildings will be created within buildings; streets and squares will be defined, treating the interior as exterior. By taking real and pure expression, this project hopes to add some nature, fresh and artistic elements into this industrial concrete building.
The future proposal is to be an sculpture gallery, which could include:

  • Reception
  • Three clusters of units will be inserted as independent exhibition space.
  • An open communication space for messy workshop activities such as plaster, ceramics and clay work.
  • The building will also remain its original parking function at south levels and form part of the overall building offer.
  • A cafe and a rooftop restaurant
