Fall 2016 visiting critics announced

Each semester, upper-level architecture students participate in the visiting critic program that brings leading architects and scholars from around the world to the school.

Students can choose to study with a particular visiting critic in a studio course where innovative theoretical approaches and design methods are explored.

Syracuse University School of Architecture announces the selection of its visiting critics for the fall 2016 semester: Julián Manriquez Botello of in.formation studio (San Juan, Puerto Rico); D. Kenneth Sargent Visiting Critic Georgina Huljich of Los Angeles design firm P-A-T-T-E-R-N-S;  Yichen Lu, Studio Link-Arc (NYC); and Richard Gluckman Visiting Critic Roger Sherman of Gensler (Los Angeles).

Julián Manriquez Botello, AIA received his bachelor and master of architecture degrees from Cornell University and SCIArc (Southern California Institute of Architecture).  He is the director and founder of in.formation studio, a multi-disciplinary, multi-scalar practice working between urbanism, architecture, art and object. Its multi-disciplinary projects include master planning, architecture, interiors, installations, furniture, and product design. The studio’s work has been internationally awarded and published. Previously, Manriquez Botello was a senior designer at Toro Ferrer Arquitectos, and was director of projects for the San Juan Knowledge Corridor, University of Puerto Rico’s Botanical Gardens and its Río Piedras campus—all of which were in collaboration with James Corner Field Operations. He was the Presidential Visiting Professor at Universidad Católica de Ponce and a visiting professor at Politécnica Universidad de Puerto Rico. He has been guest critic at Cornell University, PRATT, Escuela Internacional de Diseño, among others. He is an active member of the AIA Puerto Rico and has served as its president, vice-president and board member.

Georgina Huljich is on the design faculty at SCI-Arc. Together with Marcelo Spina she founded the design research architectural practice P-A-T-T-E-R-N-S. The firm has gained worldwide recognition for its inventive approach to design and architecture fusing advanced computation with an extended understanding of form, tectonics and materials. The work of the office has been exhibited and published worldwide and is part of the permanent collections of Museums such as the San Francisco MoMa, Chicago Art Institute and MAK Museum in Vienna. Previously, Huljich has worked at the Guggenheim Museum and the architectural firm Dean/Wolf Architects in New York and as project designer at Morphosis in Los Angeles. She has lectured extensively in the U.S. and internationally, and has held teaching positions including the Louis I. Kahn Visiting Assistant Professorship at Yale, Maybeck Fellowship at UC Berkeley, visiting professorships at Tokyo Institute of Technology in Japan, the University of Southern California in Los Angeles and the Di Tella University in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Georgina Huljich was visiting critic at Syracuse with Marcelo Spina in fall 2014.

Yichen Lu received an M.Arch degree from Yale School of Architecture. Between 2008 and 2010 he worked as a project architect at Gehry Partners, LLP in Los Angeles and was responsible for the design of a series of projects, including the Guggenheim Abu Dhabi. Between 2010 and 2012, Yichen Lu was a project manager at Steven Holl Architects, and was in charge of the firm’s many award winning projects in China. In 2011, Yichen Lu was nominated as one of the 10 emerging young Chinese architects to provide an urban strategy proposal for 2011 Chengdu Biennale. Yichen Lu founded Studio Link-Arc in New York City in 2012; he is also an associate professor at Tsinghua University, Beijing. In 2013, the China Pavilion for Expo Milano 2015, of which Yichen Lu was in charge as chief architect (on behalf of Tsinghua University), won the first prize in a national design competition. The China Pavilion was completed in 2015. Yichen Lu lectured at Syracuse Architecture in fall 2015.

Roger Sherman, AIA is senior project director of urban strategy at Gensler Los Angeles. Previously, he was founder of Roger Sherman Architecture and Urban Design in Culver City, California. From 2006 to 2015, Sherman was co-director, with Dana Cuff, of cityLAB, an urban design think tank at UCLA, where he is an adjunct professor. A graduate with distinction from the Harvard Graduate School of Design, Roger Sherman has taught and lectured widely; He was a visiting critic at Syracuse in fall 2008. His work has been featured in Newsweek and Fast Company, on CNN and the History Channel. It has also been exhibited at many prominent international venues, including the 2009, 2010 and 2016 Rotterdam and Venice (IT) Biennales. Award-winning larger-scale urban planning work includes RePark, an end-use plan for FreshKills Landfill (Staten Island, NY); UP THE BLOC, the re-purposing of a downtown LA parking structure; and Chia Mesa, the re-purposing of a Scottsdale, AZ strip mall. Since joining Gensler, Sherman has been at work on a new Infrastructure and urban development plan for: northern Haiti; a digitally-driven signage and public space installation for the Sunset Strip (West Hollywood); and HYPO-PARK, a high density model of public recreation space for underserved communities in LA.

Georgina Huljich will give a public lecture at Syracuse Architecture on September 20 at 5:30 pm in Slocum Auditorium; Roger Sherman will lecture at the School on September 29 at 5:30 pm, and Julián Manriquez Botello on October 27 at 5:30 pm.
