Founded in 2000 by Monika Haefelfinger and the late Austin Kelly (1966-2015), XTEN Architecture is an award-winning international architecture firm based in Los Angeles, California, and Sissach, Switzerland. The firm specializes in custom residential, cultural, and commercial projects and is led by President and Founding Partner Monika Haefelfinger and Principal Scott Utterstrom.

XTEN Architecture has received numerous architectural awards, including awards from the American Institute of Architects and the Chicago Athenaeum / European Centre for Architecture, as well as the National AIA Housing Award, the IV Miami + Design Biennial Architecture Award, and the Los Angeles Architecture Award.

The work of XTEN Architecture has been published extensively in notable publications, including The New York Times, Wallpaper, and AD Mexico and was featured on the covers of the Architectural Record and Architektur & Wohnen. In 2013, the work by XTEN Architecture was exhibited in “A New Sculpturalism: Contemporary Architecture from Southern California” at the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) Los Angeles.

The firm’s founding partner Monika Haefelfinger was born in Basel, Switzerland, and gained her first architecture experience during an apprenticeship with her father’s architecture firm in Sissach, Switzerland. She completed her Bachelor of Architecture at the University of Southern California in 1992 and her Master of Science in Advanced Architectural Design at Columbia University in 1994 and then worked for Herzog and de Meuron in Basel, Switzerland. Monika returned to the United States to work for DMJM/ Keating, before she founded XTEN in 2000 with her partner and late husband Austin Kelly.

XTEN is firmly rooted in both European and American architectural culture and approaches each project with Swiss precision and rigor, as well as with the progressive and experimental spirit of Los Angeles.
