The response to naturally occurring disasters throughout the globe has been a point of much discussion in recent years. While disasters seem to be escalating in both quantity and impact, the response to these disasters is still a broken process – functioning in a reactive mode rather than a pro-active mode. The results of this response methodology add time to the deployment of food, supplies and shelter, adding cost to the overall effort, and effectively causing many in need of aid to suffer, sometimes resulting in unnecessary deaths.
Our studio has investigated the many problems with this process – examining the relief effort from material source, through fabrication and implementation, to deployment and installation at impacted regions – by way of designing and building a system for shelter in response to the disaster scenario.
