It’s not too late to catch the work of students and faculty in the Department of Architecture at the 2018 Venice Biennale. The 16th International Architecture Exhibition, which opened May 26, continues through November 25 in the Giardini and Arsenale venues, and in other locations in Venice.

FREESPACE

The Arsenale Co-founded by Graham Chair Professor of Architecture Marion Weiss and Michael Manfredi, the New York firm WEISS/MANFREDI is featured in FREESPACE, the 2018 Venice Architecture Biennale exhibition curated by Yvonne Farrell and Shelley McNamara. As the Biennale’s curators have described their vision for FREESPACE, “There is an exchange between people and buildings that happens, even if not intended or designed, so buildings themselves find ways of sharing and engaging with people over time, long after the architect has left the scene.” In this spirit, WEISS/MANFREDI unveiled a new installation entitled Lines of Movement that continues the firm’s ongoing work in hybrid sites that connect architecture, landscape, and infrastructure and explore architecture’s potential to create an enduring public realm. The project was realized with support from the Office of the Dean at PennDesign and a gift from Deedie Rose.

TIME SPACE EXISTENCE

Palazzo Mora  Hosted by the European Cultural Centre, the fourth edition of this exhibition will feature work by graduate students in the Department of Architecture at PennDesign, which is chaired by Winka Dubbeldam. The PennDesign presention, 12 Objects & 12 Images, is curated by Ferda Kolatan, associate professor of practice at PennDesign and founding director of SU11.  Participating faculty members include Kutan Ayata, Hina Jamelle, Simon Kim, Ferda Kolatan, Ali Rahim, and Robert Stuart-Smith. Teaching Assistants: Joseph Giampietro, Angela Huang, Aidan Kim, Brett Lee, Emma Peng, Caleb White, and Michael Zimmerman, who also collaborated with Kolatan on the exhibition design. The participating students are: Nicole Bronola, Zhuoqing Cai , Mark Chalhoub, Woo Choi, Sarah Davis, Wenjia Guo, David Harrop, John Hilla, Angela Huang, Insung Hwang, Bosung Jeon, Dawoon Jung, Keaton Kane, Zachary Michael Kile, Kyuhun Kim, Joung-Hwa Kim, Han Kwon, Wan Jung Lee, Phoebe Leung, Lexie Li, Qingyang Li , Yang Li , Yisha Li, Michael Liu, Andrew Singer, Andre Stiles, Angeliki Tzifa, Morgynn Wiley, Long Ye, Mengqi Xu, Zehua Zhang, and Yuanyi Zhou.

ISKANDAR PUTERI 100YC

Sale d’Armi D, 1st Floor, Arsenale Associate Professor of Practice Ferda Kolatan and students are represented in this Biennale Sessions exhibition. Entitled Hybrid Urbanity, the project was a collaboration between Kolatan’s firm SU11 and six PennDesign students who graduated in 2017. Miller Professor and Chair of Architecture Winka Dubbeldam’s firm Archi-Tectonics, recognized as much for its use of hybrid sustainable materials and smart building systems as for its elegant and innovative designs, is also represented in the exhibition.

ISKANDAR PUTERI 100YC was curated for the Biennale Sessions, a special education initative of the Biennale, by RMIT Architecture Professor Tom Kovac.

BAHREIN PAVILION

Lecturer Eduardo Rega Calvo produced and edited the video for the exhibition Friday Sermon at the Bahrein Pavilion. The project features an installation and research on the ritual of the Friday sermon and its influence on public space and public opinion. According to the press release from the organizers, “When thinking about free space, and by extension free speech for Arab and Muslim communities, the Friday khuṭbah becomes a key protagonist, especially as state, law, and religion remain as entangled as ever.”

SPANISH PAVILION

Rega is also represented at the Spanish Pavilion, where the presentation Becoming focuses on the future of architecture from the perspective of research. On view is work published by Displacements, an editorial project founded by students at the ETSA Madrid. A member of the editorial board and contributor, Rega is the author of The Judge-less Trial of Architectural Things, Toward a Practice of Spatial Diplomacy.
