Dr. Mark Gorgolewski Appointed New Chair of Ryerson Department of Architectural Science

September, Toronto   The Department of Architectural Science at Ryerson University is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Mark Gorgolewski as new departmental chair. Professor Gorgolewski has been at Ryerson since 2003, and is is a longstanding advocate of sustainable design throughout the curriculum and industry. His work includes research on low carbon design and sustainable food and resource systems. He received his PhD from Oxford Brookes University in the UK and has worked for many years in Canada and Europe as an architect, researcher, educator, and construction industry consultant. Professor Gorgolewski has published over 60 refereed papers and 9 books over 20 years and has managed over $1.5m in research funds. He co-authored the book Carrot City: Creating Places for Urban Agriculture (Monacelli Press, 2011), with June Komisar and Joe Nasr. He has recently authored Resource Salvation: The Architecture of Reuse (Wiley, 2017). Dr. Gorgolewski is also co-recipient of the 2007-2008 ACSA/AIA Housing Design Education Award, and the recipient of the 2012 H.A. Krentz Research Award from the CISC and has coordinated several winning teams in sustainable design competitions.

Mark's vision for the department is to provide education and research for a wide range of roles focused on the design, construction, management, and performance of a sustainable built environment and have a strong foundation of professional integration and industry support: "Our students have an opportunity to benefit from and participate in many activities both within and outside the program curriculum. These include participating in research projects, use of the workshop and labs, co-op placements, travel, visiting lectures, competitions, exhibitions, collaboration within and possibly outside the department, special events, student planned activities, industry liaisons, and more. [...] We challenge students to remember the bigger picture; we all have an opportunity to help re-imagine a better future and contribute to new ideas about the world."

The Department of Architectural Science at Ryerson University offers a four-year undergraduate degree with options in Architecture, Building Science and Project Management. It also offers graduate programs in Architecture and Building Science. The program in Architecture is fully accredited by the Canadian Architectural Certification Board.
