Architecture Engaged SP 24 Lecture Series - Dylan Wood

Fri, Mar 22 '24
Los Angeles, CA, US

Presenting "Building Material Intelligence" by Dylan Wood, Dr.-Ing

Dylan Wood is an Assistant Professor of Architecture at the University of Oregon, with a focus on material driven computational design and advanced manufacturing. At the University of Oregon he is establishing the Material Intelligence Lab, which will leverage advances in computation to explore new design and engineering potentials for natural bio based resources. These methods explore how computational design enables simple, ecological and material effective construction as well as new geometric opportunities and functionalities.

In parallel, he is the co-founder of the spin-off company hylo tech. Previously, he led the Material Programming Research Group at the Institute for Computational Design where he completed his PhD in Engineering on the topic of large scale self-shaping for curved surface active timber structures in collaboration with the ETH Zurich and Blumer Lehmann AG.

Professionally he has worked as a designer and digital fabrication expert at Barkow Leibinger Architects in Berlin and DOSU Studio Architecture in Los Angeles. Dylan holds an MSc. from the University of Stuttgart and a BArch from the University of Southern California.

His innovative and interdisciplinary work in design, engineering, science and manufacturing has resulted in over 30 peer-reviewed publications and international recognition. In practice, his research and design contributions at the University of Stuttgart lead to implementation of full scale building technology demonstrators, including the Urbach Tower, the recently completed HygroShell, and the 4D printed weather responsive façade of the LiVMATS Biomimetic Shell.
