Sphinx

Since ancient times, various monolithic sculptures were used to mark entrances to important and sacred spaces. From giant Egyptian Sphinx guarding the Pyramids of Giza to marble lions flanking the entrance of the New York Public Library, these sculptures are used as guardians and signifiers of importance. Sphinx recognizes various types of treasures conserved within the Socrates Sculpture Park and functions to guard and define the entrance to the park. 

Firm but friendly looking, Sphinx greets you upon arrival, slightly bowing towards the visitors, offering information, and provides an enclosure and a place to rest. When not operating as an information kiosk, Sphinx offers visitors shelter from bad weather under its large torso. On a nice day, it invites visitors to take a seat on its tail. Sphinx’s form is familiar yet peculiar enough to promote curiosity and entices visitors to come closer and say hello.
