Sam is recent M.Arch graduate from the University of Kansas, with a certificate in Participatory Design. They earned their B.S. Interior Design in May of '22, after graduating at the top of their class with a minor in Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies.
Sam is interested in the symbiotic, mutually-defining relationship that people have with the built environment, filtered through lenses such as class, race, neurodivergence, and gender. Their design philosophy is rooted in the union of research, evidence-based design, and design practice as a holistic approach to design work.
Sam has conducted research on the effect of gendered spaces and the way they enforce ideas about the construction of gender expression. They were a co-presenter at the EDRA 2022: Health in All Design conference, where they shared their work on inclusive restrooms with their research team at Multistudio.
In March of 2024, Sam traveled to ASCA112: Disrupters on the Edge to present their research with Casey Franklin (University of Kansas) concerning trans* and gender-inclusive housing practices in higher education.
Sam is also passionate about class, race, and disability justice, public interest design, and serving marginalized communities in all of the work they do. They enjoy writing fiction, cooking and baking in their spare time, and taking long walks with their dog, Moose.
