Hired to provide a couple with a series of schematic design options for the proposed renovation of their 100-year-old Dutch Colonial, the project gave me the opportunity to explore what it is I essentially preach - thoughtful intervention that is sensitive to the existing vernacular. The couple, in their mid-50s, wanted to examine the possiblities of a full renovation should they decide to renovate the existing house when they eventually retire. I first developed two schemes, one traditional and one contemporary as a means of helping the clients to better understand what it is they wanted. It was determined that a combination of the two worked best both for them and in maintaining the architectural integrity of the house.
