Professor Newton chose to locate our site on the western edge of Manhattan, next tothe Chelsea piers. The abandoned highline runs through the southwestern edge of the site.Though the highline is no longer active, it brings a lot of energy into the site, and was a major influence when designing the building. The intention of the building is to provide a place for one to have a funeral, a place for cremation, as well as a columbarium to hold the ashes for public viewing. In creating the initial design for the building I tried to focus on the idea of transcendence. The further one travels in, the lower one sinks in the ground.
