LOCATING THE HEART OF BULAQ

Bulaq, a neighborhood in Cairo, Egypt, is deeply embedded in layers of history and characterized by its high population density. Decades of informal settlements have disrupted any semblance of a formal urban grid, leading to pervasive issues with traffic, parking, and walkability. This rapid informal development has also fragmented the neighborhood, leaving little room for communal spaces.

A comprehensive streetscape analysis revealed a clear separation between public and private spaces by level. The ground floors of most mid to high-rise buildings are occupied by retail stores. Vehicles dominate the streets, while retailers often extend their stalls onto the sidewalks, further obstructing pedestrian movement.

Recognizing the groundscape as a crucial element for connectivity, walkability, and accessibility, the proposed urban intervention centers around a large, central courtyard plaza. Vehicular traffic is efficiently redirected around the block, and streets are prioritized for pedestrians. Buildings are set back to create shaded promenades with access to retail and cultural centers.

The courtyard features a sunken soccer field, providing a safe play area for children while their parents watch from surrounding seating. The adjacent school and church benefit from the new recreational space and gain additional educational opportunities from the new library and museum. Restored and painted facades revive the vibrancy and character of Bulaq, breathing new life into the neighborhood's heart.
