This project’s focus was centered around the US Army Corpse’s channelization of the Rio Piedras Watershed that has been the main culprit for flooding, stormwater overflow, displacement, and natural degradation. This design addresses the lack of community resilience, and environmental, social, and spatial failure that the channelization has brought. Through typological research, a re-newed channelization design was developed, where ecology and community could be re-established. In recent years, because of hurricane paths within San Juan, it was imperative that we implemented multiple design strategies and phases. This project also tackles the idea of rezoning, the addition of a raised highway with an urban connection to the city, as well as the implementation of green and “amphibious housing.”
