RCKa's refurbishment of the Enfield Business working in collaboration with We Made That to deliver a striking scheme which reinvents an existing, tired building into a centre for innovation and enterprise, providing support to new and existing businesses in from across the borough.

Part funded by the Mayor of London's Outer London Fund Round 2 the scheme provides a new flexible entrance space which can be used throughout the day to provide hot-desking space and meeting rooms, host conferences and seminars and other events.

Following a series of interviews with users of the building, investigative work into the structural and services arrangements and the wider context of business services in north-east London, the works include a number of external changes and internal alterations to make the building more attractive to local employers, businesses and the community.

A key aspiration of the brief was to make the centre more visible from the Enfield Highway which passes outside; to provide an enhanced presence on the street and to make the building more approachable and welcoming. The use of anodised aluminium fins which echo the form of the existing canopy together with a bold arrangement of contrasting coloured tiles which run through the main entrance area combine to the create an unusual environment for occupants of the building and their guests.

We Made That worked in parallel to develop designs for a series of public realm improvements on three sites along the Enfield Highway, including the public space directly outside the Business Centre.

The project was awarded AJ Small Projects Sustainability Award in 2015.
