COLUMBIA, SC – December 2, 2013 – Quackenbush Architects + Planners welcomes Kenneth A. Whitted, RA, CTD, to the firm as staff architect.

A construction documents specialist, Whitted has over 15 years of experience in the architectural design and production industry. His work spans a variety of projects, including educational facilities and historic preservation efforts. A highlight prior to coming to Q+, he says, was being part of a team to design a new elementary school prototype for Richland County District Two. In addition to construction documentation, Whitted performed and oversaw construction administration activities, including weekly meetings, construction observation and submittal review, for the Polo Road and Sandlapper Elementary Schools, opening in 2006. His initial work at Quackenbush will focus on the Lexington 5 Middle School project.

Whitted enjoys the challenges of design and construction, one of which involved the development of the Allen University Master Plan, a $23 million adaptive reuse project that preserved the campus’ historic Chappelle Hall. The project called for creating new space for the largely historical and land-limited campus. Whitted was part of the team that proposed renovating Chappelle Hall, rather than creating a new building, a celebrated win for the university and the city of Columbia.

Whitted’s portfolio also features large public and private projects throughout the Southeast, including development of architectural design documents and project coordination for the $60 million, 142,000-square foot Greater Columbia Convention Center, and the $750 million, 700,000-square foot Walter E. Washington D.C. Convention Center.

Whitted holds a Bachelor of Architecture from Hampton University, and is credentialed as a Construction Document Technician. He is a licensed architect in South Carolina and Georgia, and is certified by the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards. He lives with his wife, Qiana, a professor of English and African-American Studies at the University of South Carolina, and two children in Columbia.

“Kenneth’s extensive experience in construction documentation adds tremendously to our team,” said Doug Quackenbush, President of Quackenbush Architects + Planners, “particularly with the range of educational projects we’re working on. We’re very excited to have him join us.”
