DESIGN PRINCIPLES

The building of this project is designed of a circular-shaped perimeter (pedestrian ramps, and perimeter walls), which contains, in an open courtyard with steps, the project volumes.
The circular shape and the different views facing the valley towards the Buddha cliff, define a harmonious relationship between the new cultural center, the cultural context and the landscape.
The creation of different panoramic views positively integrates the building and its environment and defines a truly vital center in the valley..
It is planned to build load-bearing walls in mudbrick and to use roof beams, perimeter and interior walls and woodwork. In this way, the building suits its environmental and ecological context.
The project volumes, made of composing primary forms, aim at recalling and reinterpret the design of the ancient architecture and the architectural heritage of Afghanistan.
The colors used in the project refer to the materials and places of the context. The project uses the same type of bricks and stones that have been used in historic buildings of the valley, integrating with the landscape.
The project includes and promotes the theme of playing and kite flying as symbols of liberty and peace. The project is inspired by these symbols, and, more generally, by the material culture of Afghanistan, and by its cultural popular traditions.
