This is my current project where I serve as the lead project manager, overseeing the development from design to construction administration. The design was conceived by the French firm, Moinard Betaille, who handled the concept and schematic design phases. The initial concept was raw, with many details needing refinement for constructibility.
The project involves transforming an existing Baccarat store into a new brand concept that highlights its crystal products using a variety of materials in shades of gray. The interior features custom silk wallpaper on the walls, flooring made of concrete tiles designed to mimic those from the Versailles Palace, and custom textured wood panel millwork from France, all chosen to accentuate the delicate nature of the products. Designing the lighting was a significant challenge, requiring careful consideration during the conceptual stages due to its critical impact on the ambiance of the space.
The storefront, which showcases Baccarat’s crystal tiles, creates the first impression as visitors enter. This intricate yet streamlined structure consists of tiles individually mounted on a horizontal support anchored at each end to a vertical L-angle. This entire system is enclosed behind a metal frame that matches the display window mullions. There are linear lights at the top and bottom of the crystal tile wall to accentuate its details. The client emphasized avoiding vertical supports behind the tiles to maintain the desired visual effect which poses a structural problem. We’re currently in the process of working with the G.C. to fabricate this unit.
The storefront features limestone that has been water-blasted to achieve a porous texture, resembling volcanic rock. The red-mirrored glass is custom hand-blown material imported from France. These two materials create a juxtaposition between natural and manmade elements which highlights the essence of the company, taking raw materials to create beautifully crafted crystal products. The display window system is sleek, with crystal tiles lining the entryway. The crystal tile wall curves around an existing column, effectively showcasing the products in the window display.
