Gadsby's Tavern, located in Alexandria Virginia, was a unique opportunity to work with an existing fabric and complicated geometry. The tavern is a historic structure that served as a restaurant and hotel during this country's centennial years. During the original construction of the structure a separate cellar was built adjacent tot he building to allow for the storage and sale of ice taken from the adjacent Potomac River during the winter months.
The ice well's restoration was intended to renovate an existing exterior viewing space to a more open and welcoming area where tavern visitors could learn about pre-refrigeration ice purveyance. This required the demolition of an existing guardrail, raising the viewing platform, and allowing a more open/frame less view into the ice well.
