Modern cities act as sprawling “hot spots” of resource consumption that disrupt ecological cycles and reduce biodiversity. A sustainable city requires that we “design with nature” by integrating nutrient, energy and hydrological cycles into urban infrastructure.This proposal seeks to improve East River water quality by channeling 10 million gallons of wastewater effluent through 70 acres of constructed wetlands and 200 acres of oyster reefs.
