Groen Hoak Boat Club House

3rd year final project, designed for a boat club, In New York. The building is conceptualized as a displaced piece of the context. a simple volume set within a context of other simple ware house boxes. Through the reversal of material, the building establishes its own sense of distinction by an existing as a luminous glass object within the warehouse field of opaque and solid boxes. The selection of a channel glass enclosure system extends the buildings intent through its origins as a mass produced material designed for industrial applications.

Two exterior courtyards are subtracted within the plan. The dominant courtyard opens to the water and operates as a social and activity condenser grouping boat launching, café dining and boat building on three sides. The smaller courtyard organizes the buildings public program of gallery, café, arrival and
circulation identifying this part of the building as distinct from its more private spaces which are used for boat construction and storage.

By these strategies the building is “of” the context, yet distinct as its site location mediates between urban street and the wetland on the east.
