The Southtown area of San Antonio has been booming into an important art district which is attracting more and more artists to this place. Artists generally do not earn much money early in their career. This project intends to provide subsidized live/work rental housing for the low income artists in this area, as wells as public art exhibition space, dining facility and other support facility for both the artists and public. This live/work mix-used compound creates an open courtyard and upper level “Street”, which will provide many opportunities for the public to experience arts, and the artist will also have more opportunities to get their works exposed to the public. By encouraging the interaction between the art and the community through a serious of thresholds, this proposal focuses on creating a building that enhances the experience of the urban life, as well as an environment-friendly building that enhance the existing urban fabric.
