Thesis 2010 - Galveston County Justice Center - A Mixed-Use Revitalization Project

Galveston, Island has always been the beach resort escape for many Texans.  As a result of the monstrous natural disaster that destroyed so much of the city, the pride of its citizens and fellow Texans has weakened.  With the ongoing display of debris and many other remnants of Hurricane Ike still dwelling on the Land of Galveston Island, there has been a steady increase in the efforts to bring the life back to the city that once thrived with its citizens and tourists.

Post Hurricane Ike in 2008, the city is still making efforts towards rebuilding and redeveloping the land to reach a new standard of attraction and appeal to not only its residents but also its tourists.  The relocation of the Galveston County Justice Center to the west end of Galveston as you enter the city was one of the first major steps towards this rebuilding and redeveloping process.  Through a new strategic urban design framework, the surrounding area of the Galveston County Justice Center will be a full-fledged addition to this development, in hopes of initializing a process of restoration spiritually and through the physically-built environment.  This mixed-use development will be comprised of a family athletic center, outdoor recreational space, restaurants, retail and commercial office space, and an affordable residential oasis for Galveston residents.
