This commemoration has been constructed to emphasize the gratitude and respect Italy has for Giuseppe Garibaldi and the troops he led. While walking among the red banners along Via dei Fori Imperiali, from the Arch of Constantine to Piazza Venezia, people will be reminded of the events and icons that helped make the unification of Italy possible. When arriving in Piazza Venezia, the people of Italy will be greeted by a newly constructed gathering space with a centralized fountain that encircles the nation's flag as it is raised symbolizing the successful unification of Italy that occurred on March 17, 1861.
