Recognizing that the academic library is no longer just a repository for information, the Medical University of South Carolina commissioned the studio to rethink the library’s role. With an updated conception of both circulation and study space, the building becomes more than a library; it emerges as a place of interaction. Architecturally, the horizontal split in the building acts as a point of contact between two forces, juxtaposing the old and new and compelling both to react to one another. The circulatory ramp system encourages chance meeting. The engaging nature of the building establishes the library as a hub of social confluence on campus.
