FLAT ST - APARTMENT RENOVATION

Location: Ljubljana, Slovenia
Year: 2009 - 2010
Private project

The project brief was to renovate an existing apartment to suit the needs of a young couple, a doctor and IT consultant, that is planning a family in the near future.

The apartment is set on the 11th floor of one of the block towers built in 1962 and designed by the architect Ilija Arnautovič, one of the most prominent figures of Slovenian modernism. During the last 60 years most of most of the apartments have been built up and lost their initial character and quality.

In the renovation project I tried to recognize and enhance the qualities of the original apartment. One of the best features is the central installation wall, that leaves the rest of the apartment flexible. That means that part of the kitchen could be opened to the living room and the bathroom enlarged to make space for storage and washing machine.

The apartment is designed as neutral as possible, to function as a shell that can accept different inhabitants. The floors are paved with a continuous wooden parquet, that emphasize the circular floor plan, the wardrobes are in built along the inside wall and create a long wall defined by verticals. On the other side the kitchen and bathroom as the core of the apartment were designed in strong colours. The only two doors are hidden in the wall and determined only by two vertical coloured stripes.
