SCHIFT

Mix-Use Building Promoting: Self-Care | Health | Independence | Fitness | Transformation

As people live longer, living and affording a healthy lifestyle is challenging for aging population. The rise of healthcare costs and growing epidemic of obesity and sedentary lifestyle contribute to many preventable chronic diseases. In addition, social isolation adds both to mental and physical deterioration. Focusing on built environment is one way to address these issues where healthy diet and physical activity are a staple of a daily routine. Social interaction through produce growth  and daily errands with the neighbors can keep active-aging population engaged and empowered to age gracefully. Furthermore, transit options resolve the fear of losing the sense of independence and isolation. Hence, SCHIFT - a mix-use building promoting self-care, health, independence, and transformation is a make-over center for older adults in a historic urban context. The main focus of it is prolonging active years, quality of life, and social interaction. This project consists of commercial, residential, and green spaces that intermingle together in strategically located central Baltimore - a transitional area off Howard and 23rd Streets, with growing amenities and access to various modes of transportation.
