The primary intent behind the ‘urban valley’ is to develop the Broad Street Station
district in conjunction with the existing transit hub composed of New Jersey Transit rail,
Newark Light Rail, and Newark city buses. As the transit hub itself is designated as the new
catalyst for all things downtown Newark, the geometry of the plan emphasizes height at
major entrance points, or ‘gateways’,and gradually decreases in scale
towards the transit epicenter of the site. A corresponding greenscape traces the
undulating geometry of the plan and contributes to a privatized perimeter and
community, ‘transit-oriented’ core.
