This is my final graduating design project at Cal Poly Pomona. I decided to design a Mental Health Hospital that would focus on the transition process of it's patients from the "Institution" back into society.
If re-assimilation is my goal, why not place the hospital right in the midst of "society?"
By choosing a site in suburban Riverside I created a scenario set on using architecture to investigate the pros and cons that may result. The building itself creates layers of heightened responsibility (in other words: Transition) ranging from areas of higher security to lower security.
The built environment of a psychiatric hospital is an important part of the rehabilitation process. It can determine comfort, social interaction and even encourage a transition back into the regular dealings of everyday life.
This project is my response...
