A small team across offices worked on a competition
for a low carbon community in the Pearl River Delta in
China. The challenge was to address an environmentally
sensitive, 4,500 acre site with a 14 million square
meter build out for an expected community of 250,000
to 300,000 people. The approach was to create a sense
of place and human scale with a mindful connection to
the rich natural habitat of this area.

A very fast-paced and ambitious five weeks marked
a lot of firsts at Perkins+Will, including the first urban
design large scale project to use Revit for design,
development feasibility and sustainability
performance, working with Sherwood as a
consulting engineer.

It was also the firm’s first large scale urban design
international competition in China and first submission
exclusively in Mandarin Chinese without a local partner.
It became also the first San Francisco/Atlanta/Shanghai
Urban Design joint effort.
