Riding the Tide: Learning to Navigate Sea Level Rise

Riding the tide. The concept: is an educational space located
in Marina del Rey, directly adjacent to Burton's Park. The
space is crafted to harness real-life experiences and interactive learning, aimed at enlightening people about the challenges and impacts of sea level rise. Positioned right by the
water, it features captivating displays and space.
For many, the concept of sea level rise remains an abstract
issue.Since 1880, we've observed an approximate increase of 8
inches in sea levels, due to the ocean's temperature rise and
expansion. This growing problem creates a risk of increasing
the frequency of floods, destructive storms, beach getting destroyed, affecting drinking water, job losses, and forced migration.
Marina del Rey, along with other coastal cities such as Venice,
Miami, New York, Pakistan, and Bangladesh, faces significant
risks from sea level rise. A specific study on Marina del Rey
found that by 2100, sea levels could rise by up to 8 feet,
leaving the neighborhood and surrounding area in danger of
flooding.
The pavilion is thoughtfully divided into two sections to enhance its functionality on water. Constructed on floating bases
with rubber flooring, it adjusts to movements, offering visitors a real-time experience of sea level fluctuations.
Stability is provided by two circular columns in the water,
anchoring the pavilion while allowing it to move vertically
with the tides. The roof is supported by non-moving metal
wires. As sea levels rise, the interior floors ascend accordingly.
The pavilion's design enables vertical movement with the
sea.One half of the pavilion, which houses a restaurant and
bar, is designed to fold and bend, creating a sensation for
visitors of being enveloped by the structure. The other half
remains rigid, smoothly rising with the water levels. Each section offers a unique experience and perspective on sea level
change—one continuously adapts to the tide, and the other
transforms under pressure.
This design underlines the pavilion's dedication to sustainability, inspired by extensive research. The structure serves
not only as a building but also as an educational tool aimed at
enhancing awareness and fostering resilience against sea level
changes.
