house on a hill in northern california

this 3781 square feet (351.2  square meters) residence contains 3 bedrooms, 3 1/2 bathrooms, living room, dining room, kitchen with breakfast nook, sitting room, laundry room, exercise room, storage room and both a single and two car garage. exterior spaces include an entry courtyard, swimming pool and sauna, an outdoor bar-b-q patio with fireplace, a motor court, outside storage, and ample plantings throughout the site.

the building was positioned to take advantage of solar orientation and panoramic views, while minimizing views of adjacent structures and future structures. this was accomplished by focusing between, above, through and around the existing and potential structures and land forms.

the building is separated into 3 forms, shifted from one another on 10 degree increments and cascaded across the site to maximize the useable site area and the extension of interior spaces to the outdoor landscape and beyond. each form contains a unique roof configuration and program requirement and relates to the ground plane by either sitting on, hovering above or resting below the ground profile.

a continuous 11’-0” high by 148 ft. long wall bisects the building and creates a division of the site.  some of the program elements are created and defined by the wall, while others carve holes, slots and apertures through it. parallel to the wall, and defining the major circulation hall through the building, is a 52’-0” long by 3’-6” wide skylight. above the skylight and behind a parapet wall is a south facing shed roof for hidden solar panels.

a secondary axis, more of an aperture, perpendicular to the major circulation hall, travels through the entire building unobstructed and ever expanding. it starts at the outside fire pit, in a private garden space, at the rear of the building, continues through dining space, circulation hall, primary living space, through a shroud protected moveable glass wall at the living space, finally, over the vanishing edge swimming pool and beyond. the major and minor axis create 4 quadrants for the project (public, public/private, private, utility).

1) public: contains the driveway, entry walk and an entry courtyard.

2) public/ private: contains the swimming pool, outdoor seating area and a 24’-0” wide sliding glass wall that opens the entire width of the living space to the pool deck.

3) private: a private garden with a fire pit, built in seating, covered bar-b-q patio. large expanses of glass, open the kitchen, dining space, exercise room and the office to the private views of the garden.

4) utility: consists of a motor court, garages, storage room, trash area and mechanical equipment area.

the exterior of the building is finished with standing seam metal roof, stucco exterior,  floor to ceiling aluminum doors + windows, and metal shade devices. while the interior finish includes smooth concrete radiant heated floors that continue to the outdoor spaces, and both smooth plaster and wood appointed walls and ceilings.
