This project strives to create a new, hybrid-massing minimalism by utilizing clean elements, such as glass and cuboids in various shapes and positions. It is a crafted glass building and puts dedications toward pushing the boundaries of what can be made from glass. It engages with the idea of two complex systems in horizontal and vertical surfaces for building elements: structural glass and unitized façade; which, simultaneously, symbolize the rhythm of transition between transparency and solid material quality.
My thesis is a proposed museum design, to be located in Detroit, Michigan. A composition of ten cubes in different scales shapes their own, unique relationship and promotes reflections from various angles. These ten cubes are visually disconnected but spatially connected by clear glass for circulation purpose. It is a study of enclosed space that attempts to expound on the shape of emptiness, of transparency, and of repetition. The exterior of the museum is a sculpture, intended to represent an abstracted open gesture to the audience. Clad in colored and clear glass panels that influence the lighting of the space, the texture of the facade comes from textures from the study models of cast resin. In here, transparency shows crafted beauty and material quality.
Through expressions of glass, my project is an exploration of the nature of the light. The museum invites its audience to experience the space in subconscious way and inspire new sensations within.
