Good Food

Project Good Food is the design of a hypothetical building in San Francisco, California. The build- ing’s main orientation is West-East and was designed on the basis of environmental and spatial performance. In addition to filtering sunlight, this design also creates the allowance for natural ventilation, shading and water maintenance. In terms of the spatial approach for this project, there is an established programmatic hierarchy placed on the Market Hall (a large uninterrupted multi-use urban room capable of hosting a wide range of public events) and the Test Farm (area with vertical skygreeen modules for growing food and plants). These programmatic elements define and arrange other surrounding programmatic elements such as libraries, kitchens, research areas, etc. Additionally, the circulation celebrates this spatial design as it allows the public to inter- act with the Market Hall and Test Farm as they circulate from floor to floor.

This building’s envelope contains two systematic “L’s” that perform in accorance to sunlight and ventilative performance. The vertical fins account for daylighting performance and the operable glass components account for natural ventilation. The implementation of a mesh screen over the West facing Test Farm establishes a protective layer that will allow suitable protection for the skygreen modules. Furthermore, within the Test Farm there are steel grate floors that allows for light to filter down into the Market Hall. Similarly, Level 4’s floor is made out of glass block, which also allows filtered daylight to enter circulatory and programmatic elements underneath. Overall, this is a multi-functional building that functions in accordance to spatial and environmental perfor- mance.
